I had a lot of chances to see diseases I has not experienced in Japan, e.g. Microsporidial keratitis, floppy eyelid syndrome, and very severe Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

I could discuss about diagnosis and treatment for corneal disease with supervisors and understand comprehensively about pathogenesis of disease.

I received the Asia Cornea Society-Santen Asia Educational Observership Grant in Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) (04 January 2016 to 31 January 2016). I observed the cornea clinic of three cornea specialists (Professor Donald Tan, Dr Lim Li, and Dr Jean Chai) during the 4weeks. I saw a lot of cases with various kinds of corneal & external diseases including keratitis, keratoconus, dry eye, and post-operative keratoplasty. Since a lot of patients from not only Singapore but also Asian countries visit to SNEC, I had a lot of chances to see diseases I has not experienced in Japan, e.g. Microsporidial keratitis, floppy eyelid syndrome, and very severe Stevens-Johnson syndrome. And I also learned the rational system to see a lot of patients in SNEC. Furthermore I could discuss about diagnosis and treatment for corneal disease with supervisors and understand comprehensively about pathogenesis of disease. These discussions in clinics can improve my knowledge about corneal disease.

During my observership, I observed many operations including keratoplasty (DALK, DSAEK, and PKP) and cataract surgery. I had a first chance to see osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis for a severe case of Stevens-Johnson syndrome. I am very interested in pterygium excision surgery using fibrin glue because it is not common in Japan. Furthermore Gunderson conjunctival flap for persistent epithelial defect were performed. Although I experienced same technique in Japan, I could learn important points from Prof Tan.

I also visited Singapore Eye bank, and observed preparation of donors and pre-cut for DSAEK. The system is very sophisticated. And I learned the situation of eye banks in Singapore.

I was so honored to be awarded this grant. I believe this experience can strengthens my clinical skills and knowledge in my future. I would like to appreciate Professor Donald Tan and his colleagues for teaching me, and Asia Cornea Society for the support.
