In a word, it was nice and rewarding for me to gain a better understanding about the progress of corneal subspecialty in other countries in Asia.
I am very lucky to get the Santen Asia education observership grant this year in Keio University Medicine School. In these 2 weeks, I have learned a lot and made many new friends in Japan.
Dr. Tsubota, the Dean of Ophthalmology department, gave me a short but very wonderful lecture at the third day in his office. He is a famous cornea doctor in Asia with many patents of new products and skills on ocular surface diseases. “The primary task of college is education, including university hospital. “, his words impressed deeply.
Various subspecialty outpatient clinics at the Ophthalmology department of Keio University are run effectively. I was fortunate to have learnt much from viewing a number of cornea transplant surgeries. Wait list for corneal surgery in Japan is long due to the shortage of corneas; a situation similar to China.
