My two-week elective period at KPUM was a precious time for me as I had the opportunity to participate in the 22nd Annual Meeting of the Kyoto Cornea Club and listened to many interesting researches and lectures.
I spent a two-week elective period for corneal observership at Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine (KPUM) from November 21, 2016 to December 2, 2016.
I saw many patients with interesting diagnoses such as bilateral herpes zoster ophthalmicus in a young patient, severe Stevens- Johnson syndrome, a patient status-post cultivated oral mucosal epithelial transplantation (COMET) and lattice dystrophy type 4. I learned how to treat these patients, and new drugs and instruments which were not available in Thailand. In OR, I observed many operations including amniotic membrane transplantation in a severe Stevens- Johnson syndrome patient, DSAEK, pterygium excision, and punctual occlusion. I learned recommendations for the post-operative care of these cases.
In the dry eye clinic, I learned the tear film oriented therapy approach. It was interesting to observe various breaks such as random break, dimple break, line break and area break. In the contact lens clinic, I saw many keratoconus patients and forme fruste keratoconus patients. I also had the opportunity to participate in the 22nd Annual Meeting of the Kyoto Cornea Club and listened to many interesting researches and lectures.
I would like to say thank you to Professor Shigeru Kinoshita, Professor Chie Sotozono, Assistant Professor Tsutomu Inatomi, Associate Professor Norihiko Yokoi, Dr. Koji Kitazawa and all of the staff at KPUM. My two-week elective period at KPUM was short, but it was a precious time for me. If I have the opportunity, I would like to visit KPUM again. Thank you very much.
