'During my 4-week visit from March 6th to 31st, 2017, I had an eye opening experience of observing various ocular surface and corneal surgical techniques such as endothelial cell injection therapy, cultivated oral mucosal epithelial transplantation, and conjunctivoplasty for conjunctivochalasia.'

I am especially grateful for the opportunity provided by Santen and ACS to learn and enhance my knowledge in the field of ocular surface and corneal disease management at Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology. During my 4 week visit from March 6th to 31st, 2017, I had an eye opening experience of observing various ocular surface and corneal surgical techniques such as endothelial cell injection therapy, cultivated oral mucosal epithelial transplantation, and conjunctivoplasty for conjunctivochalasia. I am especially impressed by the dedication of each of the professors in their respective fields to find innovative solutions to many clinical dilemmas. Applying both basic and clinical scientific research techniques in solving patient’s problems have significantly inspired me to further pursue the true spirit of translational medicine.

During my visit, I was very fortunate to witness the outstanding effect of endothelial cell injection therapy and ocular surface reconstruction for difficult ocular surface diseases such as Steven Johnson syndrome (SJS), ocular cicatricial pemphigoid (OCP), and chemical injuries. Both Professors Kinoshita and Sotozono were tireless in their enthusiasm to share their knowledge and experience. Equally so are Professors Inatomi, Yokoi, and Koizumi. Specially designed fluid exchange scleral contact lenses are used to treat SJS and OCP patients with significant visual recovery. Professor Yokoi’s unique dry eye classification sparked a greater interest in the understanding of the pathogenesis of dry eyes and thus modifications of dry eye treatment. All of these are an invaluable experience which will have significant impact on my clinical practice.

Finally, I like to thank the ACS and Santen for this unforgettable experience to observe at KPUM. I also like to express my profound appreciation to all the friendly and heart-warming professors, fellows, and residents during my stay. The knowledge exchanged during this 4 weeks will certainly be carried through my future works both in clinically and academically.
